Kentucky sees significant reduction in crashes with innovative intersection design

PADUCAH, Ky., (KBSI) — A recent analysis of a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection in Trigg County, Kentucky, shows a substantial decrease in crashes, injuries and fatalities.

The RCUT, located at U.S. Highway 68 and Kentucky Highway 139, was completed in 2021. Data from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) reveals:

Before RCUT construction (2016-2020):

16 crashes
7 injuries
2 fatalities

After RCUT construction (Dec. 15, 2020-Dec. 15, 2024):

6 crashes
2 injuries
0 fatalities

KYTC District 1 Chief District Engineer Kyle Poat attributes the 64.5% decrease in total crashes and 71% decrease in injuries to the RCUT design.

The innovative design eliminates multiple conflict points, reducing the risk of severe crashes. KYTC plans to continue implementing RCUTs and other safer road designs, such as roundabouts, across the state.
