Kentucky State Police investigate officer-involved shooting in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, Ky., (KBSI) — An investigation into an officer-involved shooting in Owensboro on Dec. 21, 2024, remains ongoing, according to Kentucky State Police.

Police responded to a 911 call at a residence on Orchard Street, where they encountered Marcello C. Johnson, 43, who was holding a knife and refusing to leave. Johnson allegedly made threats toward his sister and her children.

After Johnson failed to comply with verbal commands to drop the knife, Owensboro Police Officer Michael Cory Johnson, 33, and Sgt. Anthony Williams, 49, discharged their firearms, striking Johnson and resulting in injuries.

Johnson was transported to Owensboro Health for treatment and has since been released. He is being held at the Daviess County Detention Center, facing charges of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence, menacing, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and resisting arrest.

The Kentucky State Police is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure for such incidents in the state.
