Kentucky State Police step up enforcement for distracted driving campaign

LONDON, Ky. (KBSI) — Kentucky State Police Post 11 is increasing patrols this week as part of a nationwide effort to reduce distracted driving.
The initiative, known as Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort), runs from April 6 through April 13 and focuses on identifying and stopping unsafe driving behaviors before they lead to crashes.
Troopers will be positioned along roadways throughout the region, watching for drivers who are texting, using their phones or otherwise distracted behind the wheel.
Distracted driving continues to be a concern in Kentucky. State police data shows more than 5,500 crashes in 2025 were linked to distractions or cellphone use, including several fatal incidents.
Kentucky law prohibits texting while driving, but officials say many drivers still engage in risky behavior.
State police are encouraging drivers to stay focused by pulling over if they need to use their phone, asking a passenger to handle calls or messages, or placing their phone out of reach while driving.
Officials say the goal of the campaign is to prevent crashes and improve safety on Kentucky roadways. To find more information, visit www.kentuckystatepolice.ky.gov
