Kentucky urges drivers to move over, slow down during crash responder safety week

FRANKFORT, Ky., (KBSI) — Kentucky officials are urging motorists to slow down, move over and stay alert as the Commonwealth recognizes Crash Responder Safety Week from Nov. 17–21. State leaders say the reminder is critical as first responders continue to face dangers on the roadside while assisting motorists and protecting communities.
“First responders put their lives at risk every day to keep Kentuckians safe,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “We can all do our part to protect those who protect us by staying focused, remaining alert, and slowing down or moving over when you see flashing lights on the side of a roadway.”
Kentucky expanded its “Slow Down, Move Over” law in July 2024 (KRS 189.930) to broaden protections beyond emergency personnel. The law now requires drivers to move over a lane or reduce speed when approaching any stationary vehicle displaying flashing lights, hazard signals, or warning devices, including tow trucks and motorists experiencing distress.
“Our roadways are safer when drivers stay aware and give space to anyone on the side of the road,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray. “Whether it’s a first responder, a tow truck operator, or a fellow driver dealing with an emergency, slowing down and moving over is a simple action that can prevent serious injuries or save a life. It’s not only the law; it’s the right thing to do.”
Over the past three years, emergency vehicles responding to incidents in Kentucky were involved in more than 1,000 crashes, resulting in more than 360 injuries and six deaths.
State officials also encourage local responders to take the free National Traffic Incident Management Responder training offered by the Federal Highway Administration. More than 600,000 responders nationwide have completed the in-person or online course.
All 50 states have enacted some form of “Move Over” law.
