Kentucky’s Gov. Beshear signs hazing bill into law
FRANKFORT, Ky. (KBSI) – Today, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed an anti-hazing bill into law, in memory of a University of Kentucky student who died following a hazing incident.
The law, “Lofton’s Law,” makes hazing that leads to death, a felony. It comes after 18-year-old Lofton Hazelwood was found unresponsive at the Farmhouse Fraternity.
Investigations pointed to hazing and the use of alcohol.
Today’s signing follows a campaign from Hazelwood’s parents to make sure this never happens to another family.
Said Tracey Hazelwood: “This is not going to bring my baby back, but this is going to save other lives and that is all. We just want safety for the students.”
