Law enforcement warns of rental scam on Facebook Marketplace

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky., (KBSI) — Authorities are investigating a rental scam that began on Facebook Marketplace, resulting in a victim losing money.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office said the victim found a fake rental listing on Facebook Marketplace and contacted the suspect, who requested a deposit via the Chime app.

When the victim arrived to collect the keys, the suspect was absent and requested additional money through Chime.

Deputies discovered the suspect is outside the U.S. and using an internet “spoofing” program to disguise their phone number as a valid U.S. number.

At least one other fake rental listing was found on Facebook Marketplace.

Authorities urge caution when making online transactions and suggest meeting in person at a safe location, such as the McCracken County Courthouse, which offers designated parking for in-person transactions.
