Livingston County sheriff’s office seeks highway safety grant to boost traffic enforcement

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Ky., (KBSI) — The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office is applying for a grant through the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety to support additional traffic enforcement efforts.
If awarded, the grant would provide funding for deputies to work overtime dedicated exclusively to traffic safety initiatives, allowing for increased patrols on county roadways without affecting regular operations. Enforcement efforts would focus on high-risk behaviors, including impaired driving, speeding and seat belt violations.
According to the sheriff’s office, increased enforcement and visibility are proven to deter dangerous driving behaviors, reduce serious injuries and fatalities, and improve overall roadway safety for residents and visitors.
The Team Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has compiled county-by-county highway safety rankings, comparing Kentucky’s 120 counties. Lower rankings indicate a greater potential safety need. Livingston County’s rankings include:
Commercial motor vehicle collisions: 62
- Fatalities: 93
- Serious injuries: 95
- Fatal and serious injury rate: 70
- Impaired-driving collisions: 108
- Motorcycle collisions: 97
- Population: 104
- Speed-related collisions: 97
- Total collisions: 99
- Unbelted fatal and serious injury percentage: 18
- Overall highway safety rank: 100
Officials said the data underscores the need for continued enforcement, education and prevention efforts to improve roadway safety throughout Livingston County.
