Loaded magazine brought by student to Poplar Bluff elementary

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KBSI) – An elementary school student brought a part of a firearm to school in Poplar Bluff Tuesday.
Detective Joey Woodruff says another student told a teacher and the teacher told school resource officers.
A parent of the 9-year-old child was contacted. The case was referred to the juvenile office.
Woodruff says the child brought the magazine and ammunition part of the firearm to school.
He says it happened about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 30.
Poplar Bluff Schools Superintendent Aaron Cornman released a statment on what happened.
“Yesterday a lower elementarily-aged student brought a magazine with 22-caliber ammunition loaded to Eugene Field. With the magazine, there was no weapon readily capable of firing said ammunition on the student’s person. The student told two friends about the magazine. When administration became aware of the magazine, we immediately took possession, and notified law enforcement for assistance. Upon investigation, the student said she was concerned for her well-being after a recent swatting incident in Carter County, so she felt it’d be a way to protect herself if something occurred here. Due to this being an ongoing investigation, the district is limited in the amount of commentary we can share. We applaud the witnesses for swiftly coming forward. Students will be held accountable for behaviors that violate student conduct and school board policies. Safety is of utmost importance in our educational environment.”
