Local adoption center in Cape spreads awareness on adoption for National Adoption Month

CAPE GIRARDEAU Mo. (KBSI) – November is known as National Adoption Month and local officials are encouraging families to consider adopting babies or children searching for a new home.
Lutheran Family and Children’s Center has had seven successful adoptions so far this year and are looking forward to what the future brings.
Evelyn Beussinik is the Program Manager at Lutheran Family and Children’s Services. She’s been helping the adoption agency for over 20 years. She says when it comes to adopting, it’s often a bittersweet moment.
“It’s a range of emotions you know a lot of times we say adoption is bittersweet because there are happy parts and there are sad parts,” said Beussinik.
Beussinik says the best part of her job is knowing if you can’t provide the best for your child, you can connect with a family that can.
“There’s a lot of grief when it comes to making an adoption plan but there’s a lot of peace with knowing that your child is going to have the life that you want for them and that a family can give them everything that maybe you feel like you can’t,” said Beussinik.
Beussinik best part about the job is the day they make the final decision to bring their new family member home.
“That day that they get to meet their child and bring their child home is very happy,” said Beussinik.
Throughout the year, Beussinik makes sure the birth family and adoptive family has a chance to make the decisions together before anything is finalized.
“We want to celebrate adoption as a good option for people and celebrate that all families are different and families are created in different ways,” said Beussinik.
Evelyn suggests you should do your own research before starting to build a relationship with the birth parent when it comes to adopting. You can email them questions at lfcs.org with any questions on adoption.
