Man accused of stealing $80K worth of wire arrested

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. (KBSI) – A man suspected of stealing $80,000 of wire from a hotel that is under construction in Graves County was arrested Monday afternoon.

Dennis W. Abbott Jr. of the Whitehouse, Tennessee area faces charges including theft over $10,000.

He was arrested Monday, August 26 around 2:30 p.m. in White House, Tennessee by the White House Tennessee Police Department.

Abbott will be extradited to Graves County, Kentucky.

On August 12, the Graves County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a large theft involving a reported approximately $80,000 worth of theft of wire from a hotel under construction just north of Mayfield. The theft occurred around 4 a.m. on August 12.

A black and white video of the suspect vehicle was recorded by an onsite camera. It showed an older model Ford Escape, silver or gray in color, pulling a single axle utility trailer.

Sheriff’s detectives located video surveillance of the same vehicle during the appropriate timeframe at a gas station in Benton, Kentucky. Sheriff Hayden says the surveillance video provided a clear picture of the suspect, the suspect vehicle and the electrical wire that was stolen.

Search warrants to various entities were served to try to identify the suspect in the video. With the assistance of Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman, records were obtained that identified the suspect as Dennis W. Abbott Jr.

Sheriff’s detectives learned that Abbott has a criminal record involving theft and other offenses.

Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden and detectives S. Seaton and J. Clark travelled to the White House, Tennessee area on Thursday, August 22 to find and arrest Abbott.

With assistance from the Whitehouse, Tennessee Police Department, they learned that Abbott frequents the Clarksville, White House, Tennessee areas, the Simpson County, Kentucky area and local motels.

Sheriff Hayden says Abbott was suspected as being in the company of a female who is also suspected as being involved in these thefts.
