Man arrested after 4-hour standoff in Herrin

HERRIN, Ill. (KBSI) – A man faces domestic battery and resisting arrest charges sheriff’s deputies responded to a residential panic alarm in Herrin on Monday.
Brian Q. Herring faces charges of domestic battery and resisting arrest.
Deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residential panic alarm in the 14000 block of Circus Street at 10:06 p.m. on October 9.
Deputies found a female who was the victim of domestic battery.
Herring had left the home and retreated into a concrete and steel reinforced underground bunker in the front yard, according to deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office.
After efforts to get Herring to exit we’re exhausted deputies delivered a small amount of oleoresin capsicum spray (pepper spray), but were unsuccessful of getting him to come out.
Deputies made numerous attempts to arrest Herring, but he refused to exit.
Around 10:45 p.m., the Williamson County Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team arrived on scene and began to speak with Herring.
At 1:53 a.m. Herring left the bunker and surrendered after a nearly four hour standoff.
While arresting Herring, deputies saw multiple gas masks, food rations, and other survival provisions in the bunker.
Herring was taken to the Williamson County Jail.
Deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Williamson County Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Team, Carterville Police Department, Energy Police Department, Marion Police Department and Herrin Police Department for their assistance.
