Man arrested in Rowan County double homicide of mother and daughter

MOREHEAD, Ky., (KBSI) – Kentucky State Police have arrested a Morehead man in connection with a double homicide in Rowan County that left a woman and her teenage daughter dead.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said deputies conducted a welfare check around 10:15 a.m. Friday at a home on South Spring Street in Morehead and found two deceased victims inside. They were identified as Kayla D. Blake, 37, and her 13-year-old daughter, Kennedi McWhorter.

KSP detectives identified 44-year-old Joshua W. Cottrell of Morehead as the suspect. He was located by KSP Post 1 troopers and local law enforcement at a Paducah-area hospital around 2 p.m. EDT.

Cottrell was treated and released before being charged with two counts of murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence. He is being held in the McCracken County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing. KSP thanked the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and Paducah Police Department for their assistance.
