CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest early Sunday at Cape Rock Park, according to the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

An officer made contact with Jacob M. Carter at about 12:21 a.m. Feb. 8 in the Upper Circle area of Cape Rock Park while investigating a park curfew violation. During the encounter, the officer learned Carter had an active warrant from Union County, Illinois.

Police said Carter refused to comply when the officer attempted to take him into custody and physically resisted arrest. The officer deployed a Taser in an attempt to gain compliance, but Carter continued to struggle and allegedly attempted to disarm the officer, causing injury.

Additional officers responded and assisted in taking Carter into custody after continued resistance, police said.

The Cape Girardeau County Prosecutor’s Office charged Carter with two counts of first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, Class A felonies; two counts of resisting arrest, Class E felonies; and one count of attempted disarming of a peace officer, a Class E felony.

Carter is being held on a no-bond warrant.

An arrest or charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
