Man charged with first-degree murder after death of infant in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – A Chicago man faces a first-degree murder charge in Carbondale after the death of the infant.
Melvin Daniels, 28, of Chicago faces a charge of first-degree murder.
Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis contacted the Carbondale Police Department on February 28, 2021 regarding an injured infant they were treating.
The child had been transferred to the hospital from Memorial Hospital of Carbondale that same day.
The infant was treated for what was described as severe life-threatening injuries.
The child died as a result of the injuries, according to Carbondale police.
The Carbondale Police Department initiated an investigation upon receiving the notification from Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital.
The investigation has been ongoing since the notification.
On February 4, 2024, with the assistance of the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, an arrest warrant was issued for first degree murder for Melvin Daniels.
Daniels is the biological father of the victim.
The U.S. Marshal Service in Chicago arrested Daniels on Feb. 13, 2024. He was extradited from Cook County to Jackson County. He has had his pre-trial detention hearing.
Daniels was released from custody on pre-trial conditions.
The Carbondale Police Department was assisted in the investigation by Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, the Jackson County States Attorney’s Office, the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, the Chicago Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Service.
