Man faces multiple charges after several vehicles broken into, standoff with police
CLARKTON, Mo. (KBSI) – A Memphis, Tennessee man faces charges in Dunklin County after authorities say he locked himself in a bedroom and threatened to use a weapon.
The Dunklin County Sheriff’s Office requested New Madrid County Sheriff’s Special Response Team to assist with a barricaded suspect on Tuesday, October 24 around 10 a.m.
Corterian L. Wright, 40, of Memphis, Tennessee faces 12 counts of property damage 1st degree (Class D felony), two counts of stealing (Class D felony) and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, (Class D felony). Wright was being held in custody with no bond.
Officers tried to serve arrest warrants on Wright when they say he locked himself inside a bedroom. He threatened to use a weapon that was discovered to be an airsoft rifle, according deputies with the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department.
New Madrid County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Clarkton where they assisted Dunklin County Sheriff’s Department, Kennett Police Department, Malden Department of Public Safety, Portageville Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Officers were able to negotiate the suspect’s surrender around 11:45 a.m.
Then, around 12:49 p.m., New Madrid County Sheriff’s deputies were requested to assist Portageville Police Department with a vehicle stop on Interstate 55.
Portageville police saw a vehicle matching the description of a suspect vehicle involved in a shooting in Caruthersville that sent one victim to the hospital.
New Madrid County Sheriff’s deputies and New Madrid police officers responded to the interstate where they assisted Portageville police officers with a felony style traffic stop.
The suspect was arrested and a weapon was taken.
Around 2:21 p.m., the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department received a call that a person was breaking windows out of vehicles in the parking lot of Corteva located on State Highway 61.
The caller provided deputies with a photo of the vehicle that matched the description of the vehicle that had been involved in a property damage and stealing investigation in Matthews.
Earlier in the day a suspect driving a dark colored, four-door car had pulled onto the Bayer parking lot where he broke the windows out of several vehicles belonging to employees, according to the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department.
The suspect stole several items from the vehicles, according to authorities.
The same suspect vehicle had been seen at several businesses in Sikeston and rural Scott County where several vehicles also had the windows broken out and items stolen.
New Madrid County Sheriff’s deputies and New Madrid Police officers searched the area and found the vehicle in New Madrid. Authorties conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. The suspect was arrested.
While conducting the traffic stop, the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Cargill. The caller said several employee’s vehicles had the windows broken and items were missing. While processing the scene, officers watched surveillance video and saw a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle driving onto the parking lot. After a brief period, the vehicle left moments before being pulled over by the officers.
A search warrant was conducted on the vehicle where several items reported stolen earlier in the day were found.
