Man facing assault, drug and other charges after fight with deputy on side of highway

GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. (KBSI) – A man faces assault on a police officer, drug and other charges after a Graves County sheriff’s deputy pulled him over for driving erratically.

Daniel J. Shannon, 39, of Paducah, Ky. faces charges of assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, trafficking in over 8 ounces of marijuana, trafficking in methamphetamine, DUI and other related charges.

On Friday, February 23 around 4:20 p.m., a Graves County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle on Hwy. 45 about two miles north of Mayfield after seeing erratic driving and a computer check revealed the owner of the vehicle had a suspended operator’s license.

The deputy smelled a strong odor of marijuana. When the driver was asked to get out of the vehicle, the driver refused and tried to leave by placing the vehicle in gear, according to Graves County Sheriff Jon Hayden.

A struggle between Shannon and the deputy happened on the side of the busy highway. The deputy used a Taser on Shannon to gain control and arrest him.

During the struggle, an unknown driver stopped to check on the deputy and offered assistance.

A search of the vehicle found crystal methamphetmine was seized, more than about a pound of processed marijuana and other related items.

Shannone was taken to an out of county jail facility.

Sheriff Hayden thanked the driver who witnessed the incident and stopped to check on the deputy.
