Man facing murder charge in Cairo

CAIRO, Ill. (KBSI) – A man faces a murder charge after a deadly shooting in Cairo on May 9.

Samuel L. Lewis, 42, of Cairo faces a first-degree murder (Class X felony) charge.

The Illinois State Police, Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 7 was requested by the Cairo Police Department to investigate a shooting on May 9 just before midnight at 11:58 p.m. which occurred on the 2400 block of Sycamore Street in Cairo.

Lafayette D. Woods, 34, of Cairo was pronounced dead as a result of the shooting.

On May 16, following a thorough investigation,

Lewis was arrested on first degree murder charges by ISP DCI Zone 7, with the assistance of the Alexander County Sheriff’s Department, and the Cairo Police Department.

Lewis was taken to the Tri-County Detention Center in Pulaski County on a $2 million bond warrant.
