Man has medical emergency and crashes through cemetery

SIKESTON, Mo. (KBSI) – A driver had a medical emergency and crashed in a cemetery in Sikeston on July 3.

Sikeston Department of Public Safety officers were called to a car crash at Sikeston Memorial Park Cemetery at 1201 S. Kingshighway on July 3 around 9 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found a vehicle had run through the tree line and crashed into several headstones and grave markers before coming to a stop near the center of the cemetery.

After a closer look officers learned a 38-year-old man was at the shopping plaza in the 1200 block of S. Main just south of the cemetery. The man was behind the wheel and the vehicle was in gear when he had a medical emergency, believed to be a seizure.

When this occurred, officers say the man inadvertently pressed the gas pedal and went straight toward the cemetery. His vehicle went through the tree line and struck several granite grave markers causing thousands of dollars in damage.

The man was flown to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

DPS submitted a driver’s condition report for the man in question that will suspend any driving until he can be evaluated by medical professionals and the Missouri Department of Revenue.

Sikeston DPS officers and the cemetery owners are still assessing damages. After they assess the damages of the headstones, they will identify the immediate family members. Once this is done, they will be able to add this information to the report so it can be turned over to the insurance company.
