PERRYVILLE, Mo. (KBSI) — Residents across Missouri and Illinois are preparing for the possibility of more storm damage as they continue recovering from the devastation left by previous storms.

On Saturday, the American Red Cross stepped in to assist those affected in Perryville, opening a Multi-Agency Resource Center (MARC) to provide aid and guidance to those affected by the damages.

“We’re here today to make sure that people get the help they need,” said Sharon Watson, regional communications director for the American Red Cross. “The Red Cross is set up here alongside the Salvation Army, the Humane Society, and other organizations, all working together to assist those impacted by the storms.”

Among those seeking assistance were Perryville residents Sally Lawrence and Bob Clewis, who talked about the importance of the resource center.

“It is very important because you don’t know where to go,” Lawrence said. “Having it all in one place is convenient and helpful, steering you in the right direction instead of leaving you confused.” Said Bob Clewis.

Lawrence lost significant property in the storm. “The whole top floor is gone. My car is gone. The patio is gone,” Lawrence shared. “Furniture-wise, we only lost one bed, but the damage is overwhelming.”

City emergency management officials are urging residents to take advantage of available resources.

“This is a way for people not to feel alone,” said Jeremy Mantz, Perryville’s assistant fire chief and emergency management director. “There are good resources out there, both statewide and nationwide, so people don’t have to navigate these challenges alone.”

Melissa Friel, the preparedness division manager with the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency, talks about that sentiment, calling the collective relief efforts an honor to work with.

“You see people coming in, receiving assistance, and it’s a great partnership. We’re all honored to be here to help those impacted in Perry County,” Friel said.

As the region peepares for potential new storms, Friel encourages residents to stay prepared. “We always preach safety. Please be weather-aware,” she says. “Have a weather app on your phone, keep a National Weather Service radio handy. I personally have both as backups.”

For those unable to attend the MARC resource center event, the American Red Cross remains available for further assistance.

Additionally, it has been announced that Perryville Methodist Church, located at 314 West North Street, will serve as a storm shelter beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday to help provide safety for those in need
