Marion High School cleared after reported bomb threat

MARION, Ill., (KBSI) — Marion High School was cleared Friday after authorities investigated a reported bomb threat that prompted the evacuation of students and staff.

Marion police said an anonymous caller contacted dispatch around 8:04 a.m. and claimed a backpack containing C4 explosives had been placed inside a school restroom.

Students were evacuated to the Harry Crisp Sports Complex while officers with the Marion Police Department, Marion Fire Department and Illinois State Police responded.

Officers and firefighters searched the school and found nothing suspicious. The Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad and a bomb-sniffing K-9 also searched the building and found no evidence of an explosive device.

After authorities cleared the school, students who drove or walked were allowed to leave. Other students were taken by bus to The Pavilion, where they could be picked up by parents.

Police are continuing to investigate the identity of the anonymous caller.
