Marion Medical Mission celebrates 50,000 wells in Africa

MARION, Ill. (KBSI) – Marion Medical Mission, a Christian group that plants wells in Africa, celebrated a milestone on Saturday, July 15.

This mission began in 1990 to provide clean water to poorer African communities.

Saturday, they will be celebrating having put 50,000 wells in Africa providing clean water to many African families.

The communities in Africa help build the wells and provide materials while the mission provides what they do not have and helps in building the wells.

“These folks are now going to have protected clean water,” said Steve McKeown with Marion Medical Mission. “It’s safe. No cholera, no frog eggs, no mosquito larvae, safe clean water.”

There were four guest speakers from Africa, Marion Mayor Mike Absher and author and poet Ted Hawk at the event.

Marion Medical Mission has provided more than 5 million people with safe drinking water. The group hopes to continue to grow the number next year.
