Martin, Tnn., community safe room information and guidelines

MARTIN, Tenn., (KBSI) — The city of Martin has a Community Safe Room located at the Gateway Center, 701 N. Lindell St. The safe room is designed to provide a secure space for residents during severe weather events.

The Gateway Center, which also serves as the Martin Senior Adult building, operates a FEMA-rated tornado safe room. The room is open to the general public and can accommodate up to 1,050 people.

Important Safety Information:

The safe room is operational during tornado watches or warnings, but residents are advised not to travel to the shelter during an actual tornado warning.
Shelter in place instead, as traveling during a warning can put you in harm’s way.

Amenities and Rules:

Basic essentials such as water fountains, sanitation, first aid, and electricity are provided.
Male and female restrooms are available.
A generator provides power during outages.
Pets are allowed in carriers, but service animals must be leashed and have current vaccination records.
No alcohol, drugs, or weapons are permitted.
Users must comply with staff directions and keep areas clean.
