Mayfield honors legacy of African American artists for Black History Month

MAYFIELD, Ky., (KBSI) — The city is celebrating Black History Month by honoring two renowned African American artists from Mayfield-Graves County: Helen LaFrance and Ellis Wilson.

Murals created by Kenneth Burney and Stephanie Say of Art Inc. in Lexington, Kentucky, are on display at Dunbar Park, formerly the site of Dunbar School, a segregated school until 1958.

The Jackson Purchase Historical Society has donated children’s books about LaFrance and Wilson to every elementary school in Mayfield-Graves County.

The community is encouraged to learn more about the lives and legacies of these iconic artists.
