Mayfield man arrested on child abuse charge

MAYFIELD, Ky., (KBSI) — A Mayfield man has been arrested and charged with first-degree criminal abuse following a child abuse investigation, according to the Mayfield Police Department.

Around 2:19 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to Jackson Purchase Medical Center after receiving a report of suspected child abuse.

Police said the victim had what appeared to be cigarette burns on his body. Hospital staff diagnosed the injuries as first-degree burns.

The child was treated and released from the hospital with wound care instructions.

Following an interview with investigators, Sherrod T. Shelton, 30, of Mayfield, was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal abuse. He was taken to the McCracken County Jail.
