McCracken Co. Sheriff discusses how to avoid thefts from unlocked cars

CAPE GIRARDEAU (KBSI) – McCracken county cracks down on local thefts from unlocked cars after around six vehicles have been reported to have been rummaged through.
McCracken county Sheriff tells Fox23 that the beast way to avoid this issue is to begin by locking your car doors. Sheriff Norman then said that, “if you have to leave something valuable in your vehicle to conceal it, put it under a seat put it under a blanket, a towel, something like that.”
Norman says that often times the suspects are juveniles, warning that those who are caught up in this kind of crime end up with a record that follows them through time.
“The consequences of something like that or an item that has a high value could effect that person for the rest of their life and you know especially the people that we see doing this the younger generation, or juveniles, you know that could have serious consequences that you know they may never get away from.”
If you or someone you know witness suspicious activity near a car, Norman says don’t be afraid to contact law enforcement.
“Your local law enforcement agency will get an officer out there to try to locate that person and you know it can just be a conversation hey what are you doing out here, do you live out here, what’s going on.”
