MDC to offer free nature-themed embroidery series in southeast Missouri in 2026

FOX23 News at 9 p.m.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Missouri Department of Conservation will offer a series of free, guided embroidery classes throughout 2026 that will lead participants in creating a nature-themed quilt inspired by Missouri’s natural communities.

The monthly program, called Nature’s Needlers, uses embroidery to explore the state’s landscapes and wildlife. Participants who register for a series are expected to attend most of the 12 monthly sessions required to complete a quilt.

Participants must provide their own embroidery hoop, needle and thread. MDC staff will supply patterns, fabric, light boards and Frixion pens for tracing designs.

Two in-person options will be available in southeast Missouri:

Swamp Needlers: Missouri Streams will meet at the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, typically on the second Monday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. Registration is available online. Questions may be directed to MDC Conservation Educator Sally Hancock.

Nature Needlers: Missouri Streams will meet at the Cape Girardeau Nature Center on the third Thursday of each month, with sessions at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Registration is available online, with a waiting list for the 3 p.m. class. Questions may be directed to MDC Conservation Educators Sara Bradshaw or Anna Nordwald.

A virtual option also will be offered for those unable to attend in person. Participants in the virtual series must provide their own supplies. Separate daytime and nighttime virtual sessions are available, and registration is required.

The Mingo National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is located at 24279 State Highway 51 in Puxico. The Cape Girardeau Nature Center is located at 2289 County Park Drive in Cape Girardeau.

MDC said it is committed to accessibility at its nature centers, regional facilities and conservation areas. Requests for ADA accommodations can be made through the department’s website.
