MDC warns Missouri drivers of snakes under car hoods

MISSOURI (KBSI) — A Missouri woman got a slithery surprise while driving her son to baseball practice recently.

LeAnna Binkley, a teacher at Cole R-5 in Eugene, was behind the wheel when a young black rat snake suddenly appeared on the hood of her vehicle.

Binkley and her son, Grady, tried to coax the snake out, but it retreated into the hood. Undeterred, Binkley enlisted the help of colleagues and the school superintendent to safely remove the snake.

According to wildlife experts, snakes are attracted to the warmth of engine compartments, especially after a drive, and prefer dark, enclosed spaces.

The Missouri Department of Conservation recommends checking under the hood if you park your vehicle outside. If you find a snake in your car, contact your local conservation agent or wildlife damage biologist for assistance.
