Mercy Hospital Southeast to hold blood drive on April 26

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Mercy Hospital Southeast is holding a blood drive on Friday, April 26.
It will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mercy Hospital Southeast is located at 1701 Lacey Street in Cape Girardeau.
“Less than 3% of the eligible population donates blood,” said Lauren Thomas, executive director of laboratory and outreach services at Mercy Southeast. “Surprisingly, 67 is the average donor age.
There are 40% fewer donors now than 20 years ago, according to Thomas.
“We encourage young people to take the time to give the gift of life. The donor process does not take long, and the impact giving has on people in need is immeasurable. For example, cancer patients utilize one-third of blood products collected for treatments. A car crash victim can use up to 100 units of blood,” Thomas said.
Donors at blood drives during the month of April will receive a $10 gift card by email. There will also get a chance to win one of two $7,000 gift cards.
To register as a donor, visit redcrossblood.org and schedule an appointment.
Donors may also make appointments by calling 1-800-733-2767.
