Metropolis Superman Celebration soars into another year
METROPOLIS, Ill. (KBSI) – Proclaimed to be more than a convention and better than a festival, the Metropolis Superman Celebration is a spectacle.
“I love it. It’s just all the positive energy that we have, people coming from all over the world,” Metropolis Alderman Dylan Chambers said. “There’s somebody here from Germany. There’s somebody here from Ireland. There are people from everywhere, and they’re all here for this reason.”
Jeremy Holley, who grew up in Metropolis and now serves as an alderman for the city, said the celebration improves by the year.
“I’ve volunteered here for several years now, and it just keeps getting better and better,” he said. “Especially after all the things we’ve gone through with COVID, I think people have rallied around it. I feel like it’s just getting stronger, and this is probably one of the best ever.”
Holley said that along with the improvement of the celebration itself, he has gained a greater appreciation for just how special it is to the people and the community.
“I’ve come to this basically every year that I can remember, and I’ve always enjoyed it and looked forward to it,” he said. “The more I volunteer, the more I realize that there are more people who spend their hard-earned money and time to come to this, and it really makes me feel proud of the town of Metropolis.”
Chambers said the mission of everyone in attendance is quite clear.
“We’re all here for two things: one, to have fun, and two, to support Superman, and that’s the big deal for all of us,” he said. “We love it. We love the people who come out. The community is great. We’re just here to have fun, and we like to have some time with our celebrities, too, so that’s also a really big deal.”
Now in its 44th year, the Metropolis Superman Celebration has certainly not met its Kryptonite, and it does not appear that it will do so any time soon.
