METROPOLIS, Ill., (KBSI) — A rural Metropolis woman faces charges in a hit-and-run crash that injured a 14-year-old girl riding an electric scooter, according to the Metropolis Police Department.
Kayla S. Forthman, 39, is charged with leaving the scene of an injury crash, a Class 4 felony; failure to give aid or information; and failure to yield at a stop intersection.
The crash happened around 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at Butler and East Eighth streets. Police said a gray Ford Escape traveling north on Butler Street stopped at a stop sign before entering the intersection and striking the girl, who was traveling west on East Eighth Street.
The driver left without stopping, police said.
A neighbor’s home surveillance system captured the crash, providing investigators with a vehicle description. Police used the Flock camera system to identify a license plate and the vehicle’s direction of travel.
Cpl. John Suggs gathered additional evidence that led to Forthman’s arrest, according to the department.
Police said Forthman was processed at the Massac County Detention Center and released on a notice to appear because the offense was not eligible for pretrial detention.
Forthman is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
