Miner police warn businesses after counterfeit $100 bills passed at local stores

MINER, Mo., (KBSI) — The Miner Police Department is warning area businesses to be on alert after counterfeit $100 bills were reportedly used at two local businesses.

Police are encouraging employees to closely examine larger bills before accepting them.

According to the department, genuine $100 bills contain several security features, including a watermark visible when held to light, a security thread and color-shifting ink. Newer $100 bills also feature a blue 3-D security ribbon and a color-changing bell inside the inkwell.

Businesses are encouraged to use counterfeit detection methods and make sure employees know what to look for.

Police said anyone who believes someone is attempting to use counterfeit money should not confront the person or put themselves at risk.

Instead, businesses should contact the Miner Police Department and provide any available information, including surveillance video, vehicle descriptions and the person’s direction of travel.
