CHARLESTON, Mo., (KBSI) — A Mississippi County jury on Monday found a local man guilty on 12 felony counts involving child sexual abuse, following a two-day trial at the Mississippi County Courthouse.

August Porter, of Mississippi County, was convicted of first- and second-degree statutory sodomy, third-degree child molestation, and endangering the welfare of a child. The verdict came after testimony from two minor victims who prosecutors said showed “immense courage” in coming forward.

The case was co-tried by Mississippi County Prosecuting Attorney Claire Poley and Cape Girardeau County Assistant Prosecutor Stephen Killen before Judge R. Zac Horack. Charges from both Mississippi and Cape Girardeau counties were consolidated so all evidence could be heard in a single proceeding.

Porter remains in custody pending sentencing, which will be scheduled by the court.

Poley said the verdict represents accountability and justice for the victims.

“Today’s verdict ensures that August Porter will be held accountable for the years of harm he inflicted on two innocent children,” Poley said. “These young victims showed tremendous courage in coming forward and sharing the most painful parts of their lives. Their strength is an inspiration to this community and a reminder that truth still matters.”

Poley also thanked jurors, law enforcement, and court personnel for their roles in the case.

“Justice was served not only because of their bravery, but because of the hard work of our law enforcement partners and the careful attention of twelve citizens who took their oath seriously,” she said. “I want to thank the jurors, court staff, and everyone who worked tirelessly to see this case through.”

Poley said the case underscores the county’s ongoing commitment to protecting children and supporting victims.

“Mississippi County stands together in protecting our children,” she said. “We remain steadfast in our mission to seek justice, support victims, and ensure that no child ever has to suffer in silence.”

The Mississippi County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office commended the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office, the Cape Girardeau Police Department, and the Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center for their assistance throughout the investigation and trial.
