Mississippi County sheriff’s deputy faces charges in southern Illinois after police chase

BUNCOMBE, Ill. (KBSI) – A Mississippi County sheriff’s deputy faces charges in Illinois after an officer-involved shooting in October 2021 in Johnson County, Illinois.

Charges were filed against Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office Captain Barry Morgan on Thursday, April 14 for actions relating to the arrest of the suspect.

On October 28, 2021 around 3:30 p.m., multiple agencies from Illinois and the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office were involved in a vehicle chase of a stolen sheriff’s office patrol truck. During the chase, a deputy from the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office and a deputy from the Johnson County, Illinois Sheriff’s Office discharged their firearms, according to Illinois State Police.

At the end of the chase on Allen Road just west of Buncombe, the suspect was taken into custody and not injured as a result of the officer involved shooting, according to Illinois State Police.

Morgan turned himself into the Alexander County Sheriff’s Department and was released after posting a $30,000/10% bond.
