Missouri Conservation Department urges public to keep wildlife wild

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — As summer weather arrives, the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding residents to keep a safe distance from wildlife and avoid interfering with their natural habits.

Young animals, such as raccoons, birds, and rabbits, may appear abandoned but are often being watched over by their mothers, said Russell Duckworth, MDC protection regional supervisor.

“Human interference, even with good intentions, can do more harm than good,” Duckworth said.

Feeding or caring for wild animals can disrupt their behavior, violate state laws, and pose health risks to humans and pets, according to the MDC.

The department recommends:

— Observing wildlife from a distance
— Securing trash and avoiding feeding wildlife
— Not attempting to care for or possess wild animals

For more information or to report concerns about wildlife, visit the MDC website or contact a local office.
