Missouri house bill seeks to modernize coroner’s office

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — A Missouri House bill aimed at modernizing the coroner’s office has been voted “do pass” by the Standing Committee on Local Government.

The bill requires coroner candidates to provide evidence of completion of death investigation certification training when filing for office.

It also increases the statutory salary schedule for coroners based on county assessed valuation.

Additionally, the bill increases salary authorization for coroners, deputy coroners and assistants who complete 20 hours of classroom instruction per year.

It also repeals provisions allowing coroners to receive additional compensation for performing multiple investigations.

Proponents argue the bill will professionalize the office of coroner by codifying training requirements and increasing resources.

No opposition was voiced during committee hearings.
