Missouri marks world Elder Abuse Awareness Day
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Missouri is recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15 to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect and exploitation of older adults.
The state Department of Health and Senior Services received and investigated over 41,000 reports of abuse last year, with experts believing many more cases go unreported.
“Elder abuse is a widespread and underreported issue that affects communities across Missouri,” said Sarah Willson, department director.
The department encourages anyone who suspects abuse to report it to the Missouri Adult Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 1-800-392-0210.
Communities are also being encouraged to display purple banners, posters and yard signs to bring awareness to the issue.
