Missouri officials warn of winter weather dangers, offer safety tips

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — With a series of winter and cold weather advisories issued for parts of Missouri, state health officials are warning residents to take precautions against the dangers of cold temperatures, power outages and travel.

The National Weather Service has forecast snow and wind chills as low as 24°F below zero for parts of the state through Thursday.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services is urging residents to minimize their risk of weather-related injury and death.

“Cold temperatures, power outages and travel can be deadly,” said a department spokesperson. “We urge everyone to take precautions to stay safe.”

Residents are advised to stay indoors, dress warmly, and check on vulnerable neighbors, especially older adults and those with disabilities.

To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, residents are warned never to use gas stoves, ovens or kerosene heaters to heat their homes.

When traveling, residents are advised to avoid travel during winter storms, winterize their cars, and pack emergency kits with blankets, flashlights and non-perishable food.
