Missouri State Highway Patrol warns of ice danger on frozen bodies of water

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — With temperatures plummeting, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is issuing a stern warning to residents: stay off frozen bodies of water.

As lakes and waterways freeze over, the patrol cautions that the allure of ice-covered surfaces can be deadly. Regardless of appearance, ice is inherently unstable and can shatter without warning, plunging victims into icy waters.

The risks are compounded by the instinct to rescue those in peril. The MSHP notes that many cold-water victims initially attempt to save others or retrieve pets, only to succumb to the same hazards.

To prevent such tragedies, authorities urge residents to exercise extreme caution:

— Never venture onto frozen bodies of water, regardless of ice thickness.
— Refrain from attempting to rescue others or retrieve pets from icy surfaces.
— Call 911 immediately in emergency situations.
— Employ safe rescue methods, such as extending a ladder, rope or pole with a flotation device to stranded individuals.

By heeding these warnings and prioritizing safety, residents can minimize the risks associated with frozen bodies of water and stay safe during the harsh winter months.
