Missouri State Treasurer to discuss divestment from foreign adversaries
JACKSON, Mo., (KBSI) – Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek will hold a press conference alongside State Representative Barry Hovis on Friday, April 11, 2025, at 1 p.m. outside the Cape Girardeau County Courthouse.
The event will focus on legislative efforts to require Missouri’s public pension systems to divest from certain foreign adversaries, including the People’s Republic of China.
In December 2023, the Missouri State Employees Retirement System (MOSERS) divested from Chinese-based companies, becoming one of the first public pension systems in the nation to do so.
Treasurer Malek’s recent op-ed, “Why do some Missouri public pension funds still invest in China?” outlines economic and national security concerns tied to such investments.
He continues to advocate for statewide adoption of similar policies to protect public employees’ retirement funds.
