Missouri’s Attorney General discusses key issues with Cape County leaders

CAPE COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – Missouri’s Attorney General, Catherine Hanaway, made a stop in Cape County this morning, November 13, 2025, to meet with local leaders on key issues she says her office is actively working on.
“Violent crime and the distribution of drugs and the illegal distribution of drugs like fentanyl, but also illegal marijuana, Illegal hemp. We’re going to really push to get those out of stores, get the illegal operation shut down” says Hanaway.
Missouri Attorney General Hanaway met with local Cape County chamber, Sheriff, Chief and Prosecutor, she put emphasis on it being a team effort for her office to fully prosecute many of these issues.
Hanaway describes how she is cracking down on the unregulated sale of marijuana type products.
“What we’re looking at is those stores that don’t have C licenses. Marijuana is legal in Missouri if it’s sold through a licensed store, but that’s it” says Hanaway.” So, any of these pop-up stores that are claiming to sell hemp, but also cannabis products or high concentrations of THC. We’re taking a hard look at that from every level. So locally, the department of health and also the attorney general’s office and, you know, what we’re worried about is consumers don’t really know what they’re getting because it isn’t licensed, it isn’t checked out, and kids can buy it. We’re seeing some packaging that looks like skittles, Doritos, Nestle’s crunch bars” says Hanaway.
Another key issue Hanaway is putting at the top of her list is storm repair scams. After many areas throughout Missouri were affected by storms over the last year, she says they’ve seen a large increase in scammers taking advantage.
“We really prioritize this and if people have an opportunity to log on to our website, they can. That’s where they can register a complaint. It’s AGO like attorney general office- AGO.Mo.Gov” says Hanaway.
