Missouri’s new SNAP documentation requirements take effect Oct. 1

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — Missouri residents applying for food assistance, renewing their benefits or adding someone to their case must provide additional documentation under new requirements taking effect Thursday, Oct. 1.

The Missouri Department of Social Services said the changes require documented proof of housing costs, including rent, mortgage payments and utilities; dependent care or child care expenses; and countable resources, such as money in a bank account.

The requirements apply to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program applications, recertifications and requests to add a person submitted on or after Oct. 1. Applications filed before that date will follow the previous policy.

People already receiving SNAP benefits do not need to submit new documents solely because of the change. A recipient’s statement will remain acceptable for certain changes between renewals until their next recertification, according to the department.

Acceptable documentation includes bills, receipts, lease agreements, bank statements or written proof from the person or business receiving payment.

The department said the changes are intended to improve the accuracy of eligibility decisions and strengthen program oversight.
