MoDOT evaluating where Missouri speed limits could increase to 75 mph

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., (KBSI) — A new Missouri law allowing speed limits of up to 75 mph on some rural highways takes effect Friday, Aug. 28, but drivers should not expect speed limits to change immediately.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said it is evaluating eligible highways to determine where speed limits could safely be increased. No changes will take effect until that review is complete.

“There’s a balance to be struck here between efficient traffic movement and safety, so we’re taking careful consideration of any potential location, what the roadway is like there and how people use it,” MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger said.

Under the new law, MoDOT retains the authority to set highway speed limits based on conditions along individual roadways.

The department said its evaluation includes current traffic and truck volumes, crash history, terrain, road design and existing safety measures. MoDOT is also considering speed limits in neighboring states for eligible highways near state lines.

Active construction will also factor into the decision.

Interstate 70 will not see a speed limit increase during the ongoing Improve I-70 Program, which is rebuilding and expanding portions of the interstate. MoDOT said the corridor will be reevaluated after the project is completed.

MoDOT expects to complete its review of eligible locations by the end of the year.

“For now, we implore drivers to obey the posted speed limits, especially in our hundreds of work zones across the state,” Hassinger said.

Until MoDOT completes its evaluation and changes are posted, drivers should continue following existing speed limits.
