Mount Vernon Airport to host finish of 2026 Air Race Classic

MOUNT VERNON, Ill., (KBSI) — The Mount Vernon Airport will serve as the final stop for the 2026 Air Race Classic later this month.

The all-women air race begins June 23 in Alton and will take competitors through Kentucky, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kansas and Wisconsin before finishing in Mount Vernon.

Race participants are expected to arrive in Mount Vernon by 5 p.m. June 26.

Airport officials are encouraging residents to visit the airport June 27 to meet the pilots and view the aircraft participating in the cross-country competition.

The Air Race Classic is one of the nation’s longest-running aviation events for female pilots and traces its roots to the historic Women’s Air Derby of 1929.
