Mount Vernon man facing firearms, drug charges after search of home

MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (KBSI) – A Mount Vernon man firearms and drug charges after authorities served a knock and search warrant in Mt. Vernon.
Dequan J. Hopkins, 28, faces charges of armed habitual offender, possession of a firearm by a person on parole and possession of a controlled substance.
Members of the Mt. Vernon Police Department/Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Narcotics Division served a knock and announce search warrant at 4328 Lilac in Mt. Vernon on Thursday, January 11 at 12:06 a.m.
The search warrant was obtained with the assistance of the Jefferson County States Attorney’s Office after an investigation indicated illegal narcotics were being sold at the home.
During a search of the home, detectives found crack cocaine, a firearm and ammunition, according to Mount Vernon Mayor John Lewis.
Hopkins was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center.
At the time of this arrest Hopkins was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections following a 2015 conviction for second degree murder in Cook County.
The Illinois Department of Corrections was notified and a parole violation warrant issued.
