MSHSAA new requirement for band students

PERRYVILLE, Mo. (KBSI) – As high school bands prepare to return to the football field, school officials are now requiring students to undergo pre-performance physicals.

This comes after the Missouri State High School Activities Association took a closer look at the physical demands of marching band activities.

Doctors are looking for heart and blood pressure issues that could make it dangerous for a student to be out in the heat.

“I think it’s a good idea,” said David Baroni, Head Band Director at Perryville High School. “What we’re doing out here is very physical, and it’s in the heat, and uh, and we want to make sure our kids are protected, you know our number one job is to make sure they’re safe, band is a second to that.”

Director Baroni says the students are carrying up to 30 to 40 pounds for hours, pacing and running back and forth on the field in high heat.

He says making sure students are safe is his number one priority.
