MT. VERNON, Ill., (KBSI) — A Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy arrested a Mt. Vernon man early Saturday after a traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal drugs, authorities said.

Around the early morning hours, a deputy pulled over a red Chevrolet truck for a traffic violation on Illinois Highway 142 near Gothic Lane in rural Jefferson County. During the stop, it was determined that the passenger, Boren R. Johnson, 53, of Mt. Vernon, was wanted in Franklin County for failure to appear on an illegal drug charge.

Johnson was taken into custody on the warrant. A search of the vehicle uncovered illegal drugs, which were seized as evidence.

He was arrested on new charges of illegal possession of methamphetamine in addition to the outstanding Franklin County warrant. Johnson was booked into the Jefferson County Jail pending a pretrial detention hearing.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
