PADUCAH, Ky. (KBSI)- The Regional Prevention Center at Four Rivers Behavioral Health along with Pennyroyal Center Community Mental Health Agency in Hopkinsville will host a one-day conference on March 27, at the Graves County Extension Office in Mayfield, Kentucky, to discuss substance misuse prevention and mental health care in schools and area communities.

More than 250 students and adult advisors will have the opportunity to hear from other Kentucky youth who are engaging in activities to reduce substance misuse as well as interact with mental health care professionals from across the Commonwealth.

The effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on mental health in youth is just now being fully realized.

At the end of 2021, nearly one-quarter of students in middle and high school reported psychological distress in the previous 30 days leading up to the survey.

In addition, more than one-third who reported distress also reported either suicide ideation, plans or attempts.

Psychological stress showed a marked increase in students who also had a history of substance use.

Students who vaped, used cannabis or binge drank were two- and one-half times more likely to experience serious psychological crisis and students who smoked cigarettes were three times more likely.

This conference aims to arm attendees with the necessary tools to encourage youth to seek help for mental health concerns and curb substance use at the school and community level.
