Murphysboro man facing murder charge after deadly shooting in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – A Murphysboro man faces murder charges after a Carbondale woman died after a shooting on Saturday in Carbondale.

Timothy Gassel, 32, of Murphysboro faces two counts of first-degree murder.

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies and first responders with the Jackson County Ambulance Service responded to 47 Oak Valley Drive in Carbondale around 12:14 a.m. on Saturday, May 25 for a report of a shooting.

Autumn Cole, 43, of Carbondale was found unresponsive with a single gunshot wound. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

A deputy responding to the call found Gassel walking in the area and arrested him.

Gassel was taken to the Jackson County Jail.

Cole was pronounced dead around 12:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 due to injuries received during the shooting.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Jackson County Ambulance Service, Jackson County Coroner’s Office and Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office.
