Murphysboro man sentenced to 45 years for first degree murder

JACKSON COUNTY, Ill., (KBSI) — Timothy Gassel, 33, of Murphysboro, has been sentenced to 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the first-degree murder of Autumn Cole.
Gassel pleaded guilty to the crime in October 2024.
The sentencing hearing took place on Feb. 13, 2025, where Jackson County Assistant State’s Attorney Sophia Allen presented arguments.
The incident occurred on May 25, 2024, when the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting.
Witnesses stated that Gassel had been arguing with Cole before shooting her.
He fled the scene but was arrested within minutes by Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies.
Jackson County State’s Attorney Marsha L. Cascio-Hale praised the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for their dedication to the investigation, allowing for the swift apprehension and prosecution of Gassel.
