New database for controlled substances in Missouri

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- A new database in Missouri allows doctors, pharmacists and providers to be able to see where people are getting multiple prescriptions at once.

“We’re here to recognize there’s a problem and what we can do to get you help.” Says, Abe Funk who is a pharmacist and co-owner of John’s Pharmacy, he says that anything we can do to curb the opioid epidemic is important.

Missouri is the last state to launch this statewide database of opioid prescriptions that will help doctors identify possible addiction.
Funk adds, “The purpose primarily to make sure that it deters abuse, patients who may go to multiple doctors and multiple pharmacies seeking out prescriptions for controlled substances in inappropriate ways.”Pharmacists like Funk now must report when they provide drugs listed as controlled substances.

Ryan Essex with the Gibson Center for Behavioral Change says that from his knowledge of the database, regular prescriptions won’t be on the list, “Someone goes in to get their blood pressure medication, I don’t think it’s going to be logged in there, I think it’s mainly used to monitor controlled substance prescriptions.”

Prescription information in the database can only be used for patient care and cannot be shared with law enforcement.
